“As parents, we’ve had just as much training as our children, and I don’t feel like others have that same level of understanding and are able to engage with him on his level…”

“While we’d like to be able to rely on family, our kids are too much for my parents. And they ran circles around our last support worker…”

These are the kind of comments that we have heard from other parents trying to engage with the NDIS to access a support worker for their child. And they are not one-off remarks, but represent an issue that we all face as the parents of neuro-spicey treasures – we need the help and support but as always, place our children’s wellbeing above our own. We want to know that they are getting the same level of care that they would with their own family, enabling them to thrive.

We know how important a great environment and the right people are to their development in a wide range of areas, and getting this aspect of their support right can have a massively positive impact on their lives. At Lived Experience, we want to help foster your child’s development, just like we work tirelessly with our own boy to enable him to explore the world around him, in the way that works best for him.

And while it’s definitely true, the saying that, ‘If you’ve met one child on the Spectrum, you’ve met one child on the Spectrum,’ it is also true that there are many common themes and behaviours that effect our children’s lives. Fascination with spinning objects when young, non-verbal or difficulty communicating with words when older, a preference for playing with adults, and of course, their own unique interests which they adopt with an attention to detail that we find astounding.
